Government Officially Declared Friday, January 9, 2026, as a Statutory Public Holiday

The Government has officially declared Friday, January 9, 2026, as a statutory public holiday to be observed nationwide. The holiday is in commemoration of Constitution Day, which formally falls on Wednesday, January 7.

The announcement was made in a press release issued on January 2, 2026, signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP).

While Constitution Day is traditionally marked on January 7, the Ministry informed the general public that because the date falls on a Wednesday this year, the President has exercised his executive powers to move the observance.

According to the statement:

Executive Instrument (E.I.): His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has declared the holiday by Executive Instrument.

Legal Authority: The declaration was made in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), as amended.

Nationwide Observance: The public is expected to observe Friday, January 9, as a holiday throughout the country.

The observance of Constitution Day carries additional weight this year as it coincides with the first anniversary of the current administration.

In his New Year message delivered on January 1, President John Dramani Mahama noted that January 7, 2026, marks exactly one year since he took the “sacred oath” of office.

In his address, the President emphasized his commitment to the 1992 Constitution, pledging to implement recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee to further consolidate Ghana’s democracy.

He described the current phase of governance as a “Reset” intended to strengthen the nation’s democratic foundations and promote accountability.

The Ministry of the Interior has urged all citizens to observe the day appropriately as the nation reflects on its democratic journey since the inception of the Fourth Republic.
