The Junior Doctors' Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced that its members will embark on a nationwide withdrawal of services effective October 7, 2025, due to months of neglect and unfair treatment. The decision was made public through a press release issued on October 2, 2025.
Reasons Behind the Strike
The JDA-GH cited several reasons for the strike, including the fact that over 200 junior doctors have worked for 10-14 months without salaries.
Additionally, several medical officers who were previously on payroll have had their salaries stopped without explanation, and over 800 medical officers have been awaiting posting for the past year and four months.
Impact on Healthcare Services
The strike will significantly impact healthcare services in Ghana, with the JDA-GH directing its members to:
-Withdraw Outpatient Services: Effective Tuesday, October 7 to Thursday, October 9, 2025
- Withdraw Emergency Services: Effective Friday, October 10, 2025, until further notice. However, inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, but no new cases will be admitted
Government Response
The JDA-GH has placed the responsibility for any disruption of healthcare services squarely on the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana. The association is calling on all stakeholders to act immediately to resolve the issues.
The JDA-GH's strike highlights the need for the government to address the grievances of junior doctors and ensure that healthcare services are maintained.
The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
